Diplomatic Relations

Despite there are thousands of kilometers between Colombia and Latvia, both countries have found common interests and have agreed about them. In continuation follows a brief history of diplomatic relations between Colombia and Latvia. 

July 8, 1922 – The Republic of Colombia recognizes the independence of Latvia. September 6, 1991 – The Republic of Colombia recognizes the restoration of independence of Latvia. Colombia has never recognized incorporation of Latvia into the USSR in 1940. 

July 19, 1995 – The two countries establish diplomatic relations between them.  

September 30, 2003 – Accreditation of the first Ambassador of Colombia to Latvia, Dory Sanchez de Wetzel (resident in Warsaw). 

July 7, 2005 – Opening of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Colombia. Mr.Roberts Binde has been accredited as the Honorary Consul of Colombia to Latvia. 

January 31 to February 1, 2006 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Carolina Barco, visits Latvia. The official delegation accompanying the Minister includes the Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to Latvia, Dory Sanchez de Wetzel; the Director of European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Jose Renato Salazar; ant the Honorary Consul of Colombia to Latvia, Roberts Binde. This is the first high-level meeting with an official of the Colombian government in the history of Latvia. 

September 4, 2007 - accreditation of the Ambassador of Colombia in Latvia, Jorge Alberto Barrantes Ulloa, resident in Warsaw, Poland.
